I refused to co-sign my sister’s mortgage, and my brother-in-law beat me so badly I woke up in a hospital bed with my shoulder dislocated, one eye nearly swollen shut, and a police officer sitting quietly beside me waiting for the truth.

The first thing I noticed was the smell.

The oxygen tube rubbed my cheek every time I breathed, and the small scratch of it felt louder than it should have.

Then I heard my mother crying into a paper cup from the hospital vending area.

Her breath kept catching, and the plastic lid clicked against the rim every time her hands shook.

The ceiling above me was painfully white.

The fluorescent lights buzzed overhead.

For a few seconds, my body did not feel like mine.

Then the pain came back.

It moved through my shoulder first, hot and electric, then down my arm, then into my ribs with every shallow breath.

I tried to turn my head and almost lost consciousness again.

My arm was trapped in a sling.

My ribs felt cinched with wire.

One side of my face throbbed so hard I could barely open my eye, and my jaw felt too swollen for the shape of my own mouth.

“Sweetheart,” my mother whispered.

She stood so fast her chair scraped the tile.

“Thank God. Thank God you’re awake.”

My father was behind her, gripping the back of a plastic chair with both hands.

His work jacket still had sawdust on the sleeves.

He had not even changed after leaving the garage.

He looked older than he had the night before.

Not tired.
