And the third thing was Emily standing in the doorway with her school sweater pulled down over both wrists.

She looked too small for seven.

Not physically.

She had always been small, all elbows and soft hair and serious eyes.

But that evening she seemed reduced, like someone had taught her to take up less space even inside her own home.

“Daddy,” she said.

Michael looked up from the bills.

The room smelled faintly of reheated coffee and laundry detergent.

Outside, the sky was turning gray over the front porch, and the little flag on the mailbox snapped once in the wind.

“What is it, baby?”

Emily did not come closer.

She kept her hands behind her back.

That was what made him stand.

She had never hidden her hands from him before.
