The living room smelled like vanilla frosting, lemon cleaner, and too many people standing too close together.

My father’s hand rested on my shoulder when he made the announcement.

“Iris is officially an adult today,” he said, smiling at the neighbors, relatives, and church friends crowded around our cake table. “And our family has exciting plans for the future.”

Then he looked down at me.
