The first contraction came while Linda was zipping her suitcase.

Vanessa remembered that sound later with a clarity that made her stomach turn.

Small metal teeth closing over resort dresses, sandals, and sunscreen while Vanessa bent forward on the couch with one hand pressed beneath her ribs.

The living room smelled faintly of Linda’s perfume and the coffee Ethan had left half-finished on the side table.

Morning light came through the front windows and hit the marble floor so brightly that everything looked clean, expensive, and safe.

It was none of those things.

“My name is Vanessa,” she would tell the nurse later, because the nurse kept asking questions to keep her awake.

That morning, she was 38 weeks pregnant.

Her hospital bag was packed in the laundry room, beside a basket of folded baby blankets she had washed twice because she wanted them soft.

The car seat was still in its box near the garage door because Ethan had promised he would install it before the Miami trip.

He had not installed it.

He had, however, packed three linen shirts, two watches, and the good sunglasses Vanessa had bought him for his birthday.

The trip was supposed to be a family getaway.

What it really meant was that Vanessa had paid for Ethan, his mother Linda, and his sister Ashley to spend a week in Miami while she stayed home because her doctor had told her she was too far along to travel.

Vanessa had paid for the flights.

She had paid for the hotel.

She had even left a credit card available for what Linda called emergencies.

In Linda’s world, an emergency could mean a delayed flight, an expensive dinner, a boutique purchase, or anything else that happened to be easier when Vanessa paid.
