Michael lifted the blanket because, for one ugly second, he thought his pregnant wife might be hiding another man’s secret.

Sarah lay under the white blanket with both hands curved around her 6-month pregnant belly as if the baby needed protecting from the air.

Michael had asked, “Sarah, are you afraid of me?”

The question sounded absurd in his own mouth.

Then Sarah looked at him.

After that, there was no sleep.

Michael knew negotiations.

He knew bad contracts and false smiles and the exact pause that came before a man lied about money.

He could sit across from bankers, contractors, and relatives who wanted a piece of his company and know which one had already betrayed him.

But he could not read his own wife.

That terrified him more than any lawsuit ever had.
