Her Family Tried To Take Grandpa’s Building. Then The Deed Appeared-myhoa

During a so-called family meeting, my dad calmly announced he was “giving” my downtown apartment to my pregnant sister-in-law.

He didn’t know my late grandfather had secretly signed the entire building over to me.

My brother broke in to start packing my boxes, and the cops walked him out of “his” new home.

The first warning should have been the day of the meeting.

Sunday afternoon.

My father did not give up Sunday afternoons unless he expected a performance.

Sundays belonged to golf if the weather was decent, the newspaper if it was not, and football pregame commentary loud enough to drown out the rest of us either way.

So when my mother texted, Family meeting at 3. Please come, I knew it was not a discussion.

It was a verdict waiting for an audience.

Their living room looked exactly the same as it had when I was twelve.

Same floral couch with the scratchy arms.

Same framed family photos over the mantel.

Same heavy curtains that made the room smell faintly of dust no matter how much lemon cleaner my mother used.

I sat with a mug going cold in my hands and watched everyone else arrange themselves like people in a meeting they had already rehearsed.

Dad stood by the fireplace.

Mom perched on the edge of her armchair.

My older brother Eric paced near the mantel, all tight jaw and restless shoulders.

His wife Shannon sat beside Mom with both hands folded over her small baby bump.

No one had to say why we were there.

The pregnancy filled the room before my father opened his mouth.

“Thank you all for coming,” Dad said.

I almost laughed at the phrase.

Coming made it sound voluntary.
