Her Sister Used Fake CPS Photos To Steal Her Newborn In Court-kieutrinh

The knock came three days after Grace came home.

Lena Marshall had just lowered her newborn into the crib she had assembled by herself, with stitches pulling and one hand pressed against her stomach, when the apartment door shook under a fist.

Grace startled, made a tiny animal sound, and Lena froze.

Another knock hit harder.

“Child Protective Services,” a woman called. “Open the door, Miss Marshall.”

Lena’s first thought was that someone had the wrong apartment.

Her second was Rachel.

Not because Rachel had ever done anything this cruel before, at least not openly, but because her sister had always known where to aim.

Lena opened the door in shorts, an old sleep shirt, and bare feet.

Two CPS workers stood in the hallway with clipboards, and two police officers stood behind them with the stiff patience of people who had already decided where the morning would go.

The woman in front introduced herself as Janelle Brooks.

She said they had received a credible report of infant neglect.

She said a judge had signed an emergency order.

She said they needed to see the baby.

Lena heard every word, but none of it fit into her life.

Grace was three days old.

Grace had ten perfect fingers, a crease between her eyebrows, and the habit of rooting for Lena even in her sleep.

Grace was not neglected.

Grace was the only thing in that apartment being protected.

Janelle handed over the papers, but Lena’s hands shook too hard to read them.

Then Marcus appeared in the nursery doorway.

He had slept through Grace crying at two in the morning, three in the morning, and five, but he was awake now.

He looked at the CPS workers and gave them the sad, practiced face he used at car dealerships when a customer said they needed to think.

“I’ve been worried this would happen,” he said.

Lena turned toward him slowly.

“What are you doing?”

Marcus did not answer her.

He spoke to Janelle instead.

“She cries all night,” he said. “She gets paranoid. She needs help before the baby gets hurt.”
