That sentence changed the temperature in the room.
We drove back out together and walked the eastern boundary.

By the time we found the sixth, Grant’s quiet had become its own verdict.
Some of the signs were nearly a quarter mile from Cole’s legal line.

At the creek, Grant crouched by the bank and brushed away wet leaves until the concrete survey marker showed through.

He compared the coordinates and looked across the water.
The land was mine.

The timing made it worse because prime deer season was already moving without him.

Refund demands followed.

Without it, Cole’s business stopped breathing.
In town, the feed store, the coffee counter, and the church parking lot carried the news faster than any printed notice could have.
Within days, people knew enough of the truth to fill in the rest, and some of what they filled in was wrong.
I did not correct every version.
